Seasons: 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008
The Orcas ice hockey team competes in the "A" Pool of the AIHA Senior Non-Check recreational league competition in Auckland, New Zealand.
The Orcas first entered the senior league in 1995 (it was then full contact). The team finished top of the table during the regular season, but were bundled out of the playoffs after three consecutive losses. In 1996 they finished second in the regular season and clinched the championship, and in 1997 the team placed third.
An exodus to premier grade and inline hockey left the team light on numbers in 1998, and with a mainly rookie roster, they did not make the playoffs. In 1999 the team attracted more skilled players, but could only manage 6th place in the playoffs.
In 2000 and 2001, the Orcas added several overseas players to the roster, but were unable to achieve the high accolades they hoped for. After finishing second during the 2001 regular season, the Orcas lost consecutive playoff games to finish 4th overall.
2002 once again brought an influx of new players (along with a new non-checking format), and despite a mediocre regular season the Orcas made it to the semi finals, losing to the Jets 4-0. In 2003 and 2004 (the latter as regular season champs) the Orcas were defeated at the semi final stage by the Pirates and Manuwai respectively.
In 2005 the Orcas again won the regular season (under coach and former player Jonathan Albright), and then beat Manuwai 10-2 in a surprisingly one-sided final to clinch the championship for the first time since 1996.
2006 saw the Orcas pressed hard during the regular season, beating the Rangers by a single point to win a third consecutive regular season crown, and then overpowering them 5-2 in the final to win back-to-back championships.
